Firearm registration (CRAF)

The CRAF proves the firearm is registered to you with the PF. Apply within 15 days of the invoice; valid 5 years, it only allows possession.

Required documents

  • Number of the purchase authorization approved by the PF
  • Invoice for the firearm purchase, with serial number, model and caliber matching the authorization
  • Sinarm electronic registration application, completed and signed
  • Official photo identity document and CPF (Brazilian taxpayer number), for checking by the PF office if requested

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Check the invoice

    Before leaving the store, check that the serial number, make, model and caliber on the invoice match the details of the purchase authorization. Discrepancies block the registration.

  2. Step 2: Note the 15-day deadline

    IN 201/2021 (a Polícia Federal normative instruction) gives 15 days from the invoice date to apply for registration. If the deadline is missed, registration is denied and you will need a new purchase application, meeting all requirements again.

  3. Step 3: Fill in the application in Sinarm

    Access the Solicitar Registro de Arma de Fogo service (request firearm registration) on gov.br with a silver or gold account. Enter the purchase authorization number and the invoice details. Legal representatives must select the Procurador (attorney) option.

  4. Step 4: Attach the documents

    Upload the signed application and the invoice at the end of the form or on the Consultar Andamento de Processos (check case status) page. For registration, the PF processes the request based on the electronic documents, unless there is doubt about authenticity.

  5. Step 5: Follow up and print the CRAF and transit permit

    Track the request with the application number and CPF. Once approved, print on the same page the CRAF (Certificado de Registro de Arma de Fogo, the firearm registration certificate) and the guia de trânsito (transit permit), which authorizes taking the firearm from the store to the storage location.

  6. Step 6: Collect the firearm and keep the documents

    With the CRAF and transit permit, collect the firearm at the store and take it directly to the storage address, unloaded and packed so that it cannot be used on the way. Keep the CRAF with the firearm and check the document's authenticity on the PF website.

    Where to file the request: Request firearm registration on gov.br (opens in a new tab)

Understand the service

The CRAF (Certificado de Registro de Arma de Fogo, the firearm registration certificate) is the document issued by the Polícia Federal (PF, Federal Police) proving that the firearm is registered in Sinarm (Sistema Nacional de Armas, the national firearms system) in your name. It is mandatory: without a CRAF, the store does not hand over the firearm and possession is irregular. For anyone who bought a firearm for personal defense, the CRAF is valid for five years and only authorizes keeping the firearm at home or at the workplace, if you are the owner or legal representative of the establishment.

What the CRAF is

Registration is required by art. 3º of Lei 10.826/2003. Art. 5º of the law and art. 23 of Decreto 11.615/2023 state what it allows:

  • keeping the firearm inside the residence or its premises, including the entire registered private area of the property, built or not, also on rural property;
  • keeping the firearm at the workplace, as long as you are the owner or legal representative of the establishment or company.

The CRAF does not authorize carrying or transporting the firearm. To take the firearm from one place to another, you need a guia de trânsito (transit permit); to carry it, you need a porte (carry permit).

CRAF validity

Under art. 24 of Decreto 11.615/2023:

  • 5 years for a possession CRAF (personal defense) and for subsistence hunting;
  • 5 years for private security companies;
  • 3 years for a CRAF held by a collector, sport shooter or special hunter (CAC: colecionador, atirador desportivo e caçador);
  • indefinite term for active members of certain public institutions.

The law requires the requirements to be proven again at intervals of no less than three years (art. 5º, § 2º). The expiry date appears on the CRAF itself and can be checked on the PF document authenticity page.

Who needs it

Anyone who bought a permitted-use firearm with a PF purchase authorization. The registration is also issued at the end of a transfer between private individuals and in inheritance cases, after PF authorization.

Common mistakes that delay the application

  • Missing the 15-day deadline after the invoice: registration is denied and the purchase process starts over.
  • An invoice with a serial number or caliber different from the authorization.
  • Assuming the purchase authorization is already the registration.
  • Taking the firearm home without the transit permit issued with the CRAF.

After registration

  • Keep the CRAF with the firearm, in a safe or secure locked place, away from minors under 18 and legally incapable persons (failing to take care is a crime, art. 13 of the law).
  • Keep your details up to date: the holder must report changes in personal data to the PF within 15 days (art. 20 of the decree). A change of address requires updating the registration and, to move the firearm, a transit permit.
  • Theft, robbery or loss: file a police report (boletim de ocorrência) and notify the PF.
  • Replacement: to update details or replace a lost document, request a replacement (R$ 88,00).
  • Renewal: start before expiry. See the registration renewal guide.

What changed recently

  • 21/07/2023: Decreto 11.615/2023 reduced the validity of the possession CRAF to 5 years (previously 10 years). Under art. 80, the new term applies to current CRAFs in which, on the date of the decree, less than half of the original term had elapsed. The PF advises requesting a replacement to obtain the document with the updated validity.
  • 21/02/2024: the PF updated its guidance on the new 5-year validity and on the fee table.
  • 2026: the official registration service page was updated on 24/07/2026 and confirms the 5-year validity and the issuance of the CRAF and transit permit at the end of the process.

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers to the most common questions about this service.

What is a CRAF?

CRAF is the Certificado de Registro de Arma de Fogo (firearm registration certificate), issued by the Polícia Federal (Federal Police). It proves that the firearm is registered in Sinarm in your name and allows you to keep it at home or at the workplace, if you are the legal representative.

How long is a CRAF valid?

For personal defense possession, the CRAF is valid for 5 years, under art. 24 of Decreto 11.615/2023. For CAC (collectors, sport shooters and hunters), validity is 3 years. The date appears on the document itself.

What is the deadline to register the firearm after purchase?

15 days from the invoice date, under PF IN 201/2021. If the deadline passes, registration is denied and you will have to request a new purchase authorization.

Does the CRAF allow me to carry the firearm?

No. The CRAF only authorizes keeping the firearm at home or at the workplace. Transporting requires a transit permit, and carrying requires a carry permit (porte), granted by the PF on an exceptional basis.

My old CRAF said 10 years. Is it still valid?

It depends on the date. Decreto 11.615/2023 applies the 5-year validity to CRAFs that, on 21/07/2023, had completed less than half of the original term. The PF advises requesting a replacement to update the document and checking validity on the authenticity page.

How do I check whether a CRAF is genuine?

Use the Verificar Autenticidade de Documentos (verify document authenticity) page on the Polícia Federal website. Sinarm documents are issued electronically and authenticity must be confirmed there.
