Accreditation

Accreditation of firearms and shooting instructors (IAT) with the Polícia Federal

Instructors who run the technical capacity test must pass the PF (Federal Police) selection process, opened by public notice. It is free and valid for 4 years.

Required documents

  • Application form (requerimento) and candidate technical information sheet, in the notice's templates, filled in on a computer and signed by hand
  • Identity document and CPF (Brazilian taxpayer number) proving a minimum age of 25 (except for the exceptions in art. 28 of Lei 10.826/2003)
  • Recent 3x4 photo
  • Proof of residence in the state of the notice, issued within the last 60 days (if it is in someone else's name, attach their statement with a copy of their identity document)
  • Shooting instructor course certificate from a registered company, meeting the minimum curriculum of art. 19, IV, of IN 111/2017-DG/PF (for active police officers under art. 6, I and II, of Lei 10.826, a certificate from the force or a statement from its head)
  • Psychological fitness report for handling firearms, issued by a psychologist accredited by the PF, with the assessment done no more than one year earlier
  • Clean criminal record certificates from the Federal, State (including Small Claims Court), Military and Electoral courts, for the places you lived in the last five years (the electoral one must be the criminal certificate, not the certificate of compliance)
  • Statement that you are not under police investigation or criminal prosecution
  • Registration certificates of your own firearms to be used in the practical exam (in the 2026 Bahia notice: revolver of at least .38 caliber and pistol of at least .380 caliber)

Step by step

  1. Step 1: Take the instructor course

Complete a firearms and shooting instructor course at a registered company that follows the minimum curriculum in art. 19, IV, of IN 111/2017-DG/PF. Without this certificate the application is rejected.

  2. Step 2: Follow your state's notice

Selection processes are opened by a notice (edital) from each PF Regional Superintendency and published on the Editais de Credenciamento page (Credenciamentos 2026) of the PF website. You can only apply in the state where you live and will work.

  3. Step 3: Prepare the report and certificates

Take the psychological assessment with a PF accredited psychologist (valid if done within one year) and obtain the criminal record certificates close to the application date. Check that name, parents' names and CPF are correct: a certificate with incorrect details is disregarded.

  4. Step 4: Submit the application in the notice's format

Use the channel stated in the notice. In the 2026 Bahia notice, for example, everything was sent by email, in a single PDF file, in the listed order, with name and CPF in the subject line. Other states may require in person delivery at the Delegacia de Controle de Armas (DELEARM, the PF firearms control office).

  5. Step 5: Wait for approval of the application

The PF checks the documents and runs a background check. The list of approved applications is published on the PF website and by email. If yours is rejected, the notice opens a period for appeal.

  6. Step 6: Take the four elimination exams

The exams are run by the Comissão Nacional de Credenciamento de Instrutores (CONAT, the national instructor accreditation committee): written exam, practical shooting exam with handguns, oral and firing line commands exam, and disassembly and assembly of a revolver, pistol and pump shotgun. Bring glasses, hearing protection, holsters and the firearms with registration and transit permit.

  7. Step 7: Start working after the ordinance

Once approved, you are accredited by an ordinance (portaria) published in the Superintendency's Aditamento Semanal (weekly bulletin) and receive the certificate. From then on, notify the PF electronically, at least three business days in advance, of the place, date, time and candidates of each test, and keep the report, written test and target for five years.

  8. Step 8: Renew in advance

Accreditation is valid for four years. To renew, submit the documents in art. 6 of IN 111/2017 again at least 60 days before expiry. That way you can keep working until the next accreditation exam.

Understand the service

The firearms and shooting instructor accredited by the Polícia Federal (Federal Police), known as IAT (instrutor de armamento e tiro), is the professional authorized to run the technical capacity test and issue the report proving that a person knows how to handle and shoot a firearm safely. This report is required for purchase, registration, transfer, registration renewal, carry license and the CR (Certificado de Registro, the registration certificate) of collectors, shooters and hunters (CAC: colecionador, atirador desportivo e caçador). To become an IAT you must pass a PF selection process, opened by a public notice in each state. Accreditation is free and valid for four years.

What IAT accreditation is

Art. 11-A of Lei 10.826/2003 (Estatuto do Desarmamento, the Disarmament Statute) requires the Polícia Federal to accredit the professionals who certify technical capacity. Decreto 11.615/2023 (art. 61) leaves the rules to the PF, which set them in Instrução Normativa (IN, normative instruction) nº 111/2017-DG/PF. Each Regional Superintendency publishes its own notice.

The instructor's report certifies three things:

  • knowledge of firearm safety rules;
  • basic knowledge of the parts and operation of the firearm;
  • ability to use it, demonstrated at a regular and authorized shooting range.

Accredited instructors are registered in Sinarm (Sistema Nacional de Armas, the PF national firearms register) and appear on the public list of accredited instructors on the PF website.

Who can get accredited

  • A person aged 25 or older on the date of the written exam (except for the exceptions in art. 28 of Lei 10.826/2003).
  • Who lives in the state of the notice and will work there.
  • With a shooting instructor course that meets the minimum curriculum of IN 111/2017.
  • With a favorable psychological report and no criminal record.

Active police officers from the institutions in art. 6, I and II, of Lei 10.826 may present their own force's certificate and, instead of the psychological report and certificates, a statement from the institution.

Common mistakes that delay the application

  • An electoral certificate of compliance instead of the electoral criminal record certificate.
  • Certificates with incomplete name or parents' names, or not covering the places of residence in the last five years.
  • A psychological report more than one year old or issued by a non accredited psychologist.
  • Proof of residence older than 60 days or in a third party's name without the statement.
  • Applying in a state other than the state of residence.
  • Arriving at the practical exam without the firearm registration, without a transit permit or without protective equipment.

After accreditation

The PF may inspect tests without prior notice and, under Decreto 11.615/2023 (art. 65), also remotely. IN 111/2017 lists grounds for suspension and loss of accreditation, such as using an irregular range, failing to report a test, diverting ammunition or charging above the legal cap. Anyone who loses accreditation can only apply again after four years.

If you move to another state while accredited, the accreditation can be approved by the new Superintendency, with proof of residence and a certificate of good standing from the original unit.

Once accredited, you can sign up for the Tiro Seguro directory so people who need the test can find you.

What changed recently

  • 1 July 2025: the Polícia Federal took over CAC registration and oversight from the Exército. IN DG/PF nº 311/2025 (published in the DOU, Official Gazette, on 30/06/2025) began requiring, for the CR and for firearm purchases by CACs, proof of technical capacity issued by an instructor accredited by the PF.
  • Decreto 11.615/2023, art. 65: provides that instructors and psychologists be chosen electronically, on an alternating and random basis, and that results be entered in the system by the accredited professionals themselves.
  • 31 December 2024: Decreto 12.345/2024 changed several points of Decreto 11.615/2023, but did not change the instructor accreditation rules.
  • 2026: accreditation notices published by several Superintendencies; the service page on gov.br was updated on 29/07/2026.

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers to the most common questions about this service.

How much can a PF accredited instructor charge for the shooting test?

At most R$ 80,00, plus the cost of ammunition. The limit is in art. 11-A, § 2, of Lei 10.826/2003 and art. 3, § 6, of IN 111/2017-DG/PF. Charging more is grounds for loss of accreditation.

How long is firearms and shooting instructor accreditation valid?

Four years, counted from publication of the accreditation ordinance. To renew, the instructor submits the documents again at least 60 days before expiry.

What is the minimum age to be an accredited instructor?

25 years on the date of the written exam. The exceptions are the cases in art. 28 of Lei 10.826/2003, such as members of certain security institutions.

Is IAT accreditation paid?

No. The PF (Polícia Federal) states that the service is free. The candidate only pays for the course, psychological report, ammunition and travel.

Can I apply under another state's notice?

No. IN 111/2017 only allows taking part in the process in the state where you live and intend to work. If you move after being accredited, you can request approval from the new Superintendency.

When do instructor accreditation notices open?

IN 111/2017 provides for a process every six months, but each Superintendency publishes its notice on its own schedule. Follow the Editais de Credenciamento page on the PF website, in the firearms and shooting instructors section.
