Voluntary surrender of firearms (entrega voluntária)
Anyone can surrender a firearm, registered or not, with a transit permit from the Desarma system. Compensation ranges from R$ 150 to R$ 450.
The firearm must be registered and you must hold a carry permit or a valid transport authorization for the route (guia de trânsito from the PF or, for a CAC, the Guia de Tráfego Especial in Sinarm-CAC). Without this, the PF (Polícia Federal, the Federal Police) will not validate the form.
Use the same name on the ticket as on the form. Tell the airline you will be carrying a checked firearm and review its baggage and packing rules. If you will use the airline's envelope, pick it up at check-in before going to the PF.
In the Despachar Arma de Fogo (Check a Firearm) service on gov.br, click Iniciar (Start) and log in with your gov.br account. Fill in the GDAF with your details, the airline operating the flight, all outbound legs and connections, the booking code, the details of each firearm (Sinarm or Sigma number, type, make, caliber, serial number) and the number of the carry permit or transit permit. Up to 6 firearms fit on one form; the return trip requires another GDAF.
The system emails you a PDF with the copies of the form. Print all of them: the PF offers no computer or printer at the airport and does not correct a form with errors, which must be redone.
Unloading is the passenger's responsibility, before arriving at the airport or at the place indicated by the airport operator. Use a rigid case that can be sealed, the airline's envelope (firearm in one, ammunition and magazines in another) or, for a long gun, its own packaging that can be sealed. Checked ammunition is limited to 5 kg per passenger.
Go to the PF office at the departure airport (or the unit responsible for it) before check-in, with the form, your ID and the firearm documents. Validation can be done before the day of the flight, but the form's QR Code only works on the flight date. Holders of a valid carry permit may get automatic validation after a first in-person validation.
With the validated form, hand over the packed and sealed firearm at the airline counter and give one copy of the form to the agent. One copy travels with the firearm and another stays with you. The airline must tell you where the firearm will be returned.
The airline has up to 1 hour after the aircraft is chocked (parked at the destination) to return the firearm, outside the airport's restricted area. If it does not return it within that time, the firearm is considered lost in transit (extravio): the airline must notify you and the PF and reimburse your expenses.
Where to file the request: Check a firearm (Despachar arma de fogo) on gov.br (opens in a new tab)
To fly with a firearm on a domestic flight in Brazil, the rule is to check it: you generate the Guia de Despacho de Arma de Fogo (GDAF, the firearm check-in form) in SISCAER, a Polícia Federal (Federal Police) system, validate the form at the airport PF office and hand over the unloaded, packed firearm at check-in so it travels in the hold. Carrying the firearm in the cabin (embarque armado, armed boarding) is an exception, only for public officers with an official carry permit who prove they need the firearm during the flight. The PF service is free.
Transporting firearms on civil aircraft follows Resolução ANAC nº 461/2018 (a resolution of ANAC, the civil aviation agency), in force since 07/28/2018, and, within the PF, IN DG/PF nº 272/2024. Since the resolution, control has been computerized by the PF, in SISCAER (the PF system for authorizations of firearms on aircraft).
There are two forms:
Checking: any passenger whose firearm and transport are legal. In practice, this means a registered firearm and a valid carry permit, or a transport authorization for the route (guia de trânsito, the PF transit permit, or, for a CAC (colecionador, atirador desportivo e caçador: collector, sport shooter and hunter), the Guia de Tráfego Especial, the special traffic permit from Sinarm-CAC). There is no legal limit on checked firearms, but each GDAF holds up to 6.
Armed boarding: only public officers who both carry a firearm by reason of their position and can prove they need access to it between the departure lounge and disembarkation. The need is limited to:
Retired officers and reservists may not board armed. Each authorized passenger carries at most 2 unloaded handguns, with 1 main load and 2 spare loads per firearm, or up to 2 precision rifles, unloaded, disassembled and in a locked case.
Have at hand the firearm registration, the carry permit or transport permit and the flight booking. The name on the form must be identical to the one on the ticket. On the form, enter the airline that operates the flight, which may differ from the one that sold the ticket (codeshare).
Open the Despachar Arma de Fogo (Check a Firearm) service on gov.br and log in with your gov.br account (bronze, silver or gold level). Enter:
All outbound legs go on one form; the return needs another. The PDF with the copies arrives by email. Print everything.
Go to the PF office at the departure airport before check-in. The PF checks the form and documents and may ask to see the unloaded firearm. The list of validation locations is in the PF's frequently asked questions on firearms control on aircraft (updated on 02/19/2026).
The form can be validated in advance, even on another day, but the QR Code is only activated on the day of the flight.
At the counter, hand over the sealed firearm and the copy of the form. When communication between SISCAER and the airline works, presenting the paper may be waived, and the PF tells you this at validation. At the destination, the firearm must be returned within 1 hour after the aircraft is chocked, discreetly and outside the restricted area.
Holders of a carry permit by prerogative of office, a personal defense carry permit or an on-duty security guard carry permit, all valid, with a firearm validly registered in Sinarm (or in Sigma, when the integration works), may have the GDAF validated automatically, without going to the PF. To do so:
The in-person validation is valid for 2 years. Automatic validation does not apply to armed boarding forms or to those traveling only with a transit or traffic permit.
Armed boarding is prohibited on international flights, except under treaties. Checking follows the same procedure as on domestic flights, but also requires authorization to take the firearm abroad (Resolução ANAC 461/2018 mentions the one from the Comando do Exército, the Brazilian Army Command). The laws of the destination country and the airline's rules, which may be stricter, also apply.
This guide is for information only and does not replace the official rules or guidance from the Polícia Federal and the airline. Rules change: always check the current version of Resolução ANAC nº 461/2018, IN DG/PF nº 272/2024, Lei 10.826/2003, Decreto 11.615/2023 and IN DG/PF nº 311/2025 before traveling.

Direct answers to the most common questions about this service.
As a rule, no. Under Resolução ANAC 461/2018, only public officers who carry a firearm by reason of their position and prove they need access to it during the flight may board armed. All other passengers check the firearm in the hold.
Generate the Guia de Despacho de Arma de Fogo (GDAF, the firearm check-in form) in SISCAER, through the Despachar Arma de Fogo service on gov.br, and print the copies. Validate the form at the airport Polícia Federal (Federal Police) office and hand over the unloaded, sealed firearm at the airline check-in.
Up to 5 kg per passenger, as checked baggage. Explosive and incendiary projectiles are prohibited, and the ammunition must be kept separate from the firearm when using the airline's envelope.
Yes, if the firearm is legal and there is a valid Guia de Tráfego Especial (special traffic permit) for the route, issued in Sinarm-CAC. The traffic permit is entered on the GDAF and shown at the PF validation.
The Polícia Federal (Federal Police) form and validation are free. The airline may charge for checked baggage according to the fare purchased.
If the firearm is not returned within 1 hour after the aircraft is chocked, it is considered lost in transit (extravio), and the airline must notify you and the PF and reimburse your expenses. If it is not returned in the same condition after 48 hours, the airline has 14 days to return the firearm or pay the market value.
Yes. The PF allows the GDAF to be validated right after it is generated. The form's QR Code, however, is only activated on the flight date entered on it.
